Jefferson and the Right of Secession

If there be any among us who would wish to dissolve this Union or to change its republican form, let them stand undisturbed as monuments to the safety with which error of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it.
- Thomas Jefferson (1801)

  1. I like this quote because it shows what Jefferson thought of secession and free speech. Here he was requesting that members who opposed the Republican Union to stand so that they and others may know that difference of opinion is tolerated and respected. And where a difference of opinion occurs, to let reason and logic find an answer if there is one, but never violence.
